Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you offer family therapy?
I primarily work with individuals and couples regarding relationship-based difficulties and occasionally work with family members in pairs of two. For example; siblings, or with an adult parent and adult-child. I currently do not work with children/adolescents, so am unable to offer family therapy with children.
  • What can I expect from an initial session?
We will gently start by exploring your current concerns and emotional state. I'll help you identify your needs, and share how we could work together to address them. If safety is a concern, we will create a safety plan together. It's important to me that you feel comfortable, so we'll see how well we connect and whether this feels like the right fit for you as well.
  • What if I need to reschedule or cancel my session?
Please contact me by email at least 24 hours prior, or a full fee may be charged for the cancelled or missed session. I strive to be flexible and work with you to reschedule when necessary.
  • What if I am unclear about my problems?
Without self-exploration, therapy would be pointless! The purpose of therapy is to shine a light on the areas and themes that are showing up consistently for you. Together we can detect patterns and explore the emotional impact of these patterns on you or your relationships. For clients who struggle to articulate what they are having difficulty with, I often guide them to reflect on the thought process they had when deciding to start therapy.
  • How do I know whether individual or couples therapy is right for me?
If you are struggling within your relationship currently, this may be a confusing question for you. The benefits of both forms of therapy may be unclear to you at this time. I would highly recommend booking an individual session to discuss your concerns and needs first. From here, we can talk about what may beneficial for you ongoing. There are some circumstances where couples therapy is not recommended (for example, when there is a presence of violence).
  • Can I have a support person with me?
Absolutely! Many people find their first therapy session daunting, so having a support person there for you can be beneficial to ensure you feel more comfortable. You may find that once we start, you feel okay for your support person to wait in the waiting room. My focus is on creating a safe space for you, and this includes finding ways to make therapy more accessible to you. There may be opportunities later in the therapeutic process to include a support person to help your process as well - this would be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
  • How long is each therapy session?
Each session is a full 60 minutes. There may be circumstances where it is deemed appropriate to have a double-session, or more frequent sessions. This will be determined on an individual basis.

Supporting couples to repair, rebuild and navigate the haze

Understanding ourselves, and our thoughts and behaviours, is one thing. Understanding it within the context of a relationship is another entirely. Add to this the unique nuances, complexities and experiences that exist within every relationship we enter into. It can be a lot to unpack and navigate. More so, when we might not even be aware of why certain patterns keep repeating.

Whether your challenges are related to communication, betrayal, intimacy, or unhealthy dynamics, I use Emotion-Focused Therapy to help you get to that place where you can do things like have conversations without escalation, sex without scheduling, and trust without criticism.

"While presenting issues for couples may sound simplified, often beneath the surface is a deeper constellation of important elements to consider.

With extensive training in EFT-C (Emotion-Focused Therapy for Couples) my approach is centred upon helping you understand your emotions and those elements. Ultimately supporting you to recognise how your emotions may be affecting your actions and decisions within your relationship.

Helping you gain clarity & connection

When working with couples I always begin by helping them gain clarity about what's happening in the relationship. We'll identify and assess your specific relationship dynamic, acknowledging and articulating any unmet needs. These needs may relate to ruptures that are yet to be repaired, a lack of connection, or uncertainty on how to actually have a healthy relationship.

Working with you, I'll provide practical tools and facilitation of emotional conversations to help foster deeper understanding and connection.

Stephanie's guidance has led to significant improvements in how we interact and feel about each other.

Stephanie is an exceptional counsellor. My sister and I, both in our 30s, began our joint sessions with her a few months ago when our relationship was extremely strained and on the verge of estrangement. In a very short space of time, Stephanie's guidance has led to significant improvements in how we interact and feel about each other.

We now understand ourselves and each other much more clearly, and have implemented practical strategies that have greatly improved our relationship. Stephanie's authenticity, warmth, and empathy are evident in every session, and I am incredibly grateful for the difference she has made in our lives.
